Ground Investigation

Multipurpose ground investigation

Modern, multipurpose rigs for geotechnical and environmental site investigation - from rotary drilling and window sampling through to safe vacuum excavation.

Ground investigation FAQs

Method selection, contaminated ground and monitoring - what consultants ask us most.

Which drilling method should we specify - window sampling or rotary?

It comes down to depth, ground conditions, access and what you need from the samples. Window and windowless sampling is quick, low-disturbance and ideal for shallower geotechnical and environmental holes in soils and made ground, and it reaches restricted and difficult sites where larger rigs cannot. Rotary drilling is the method for coring rock and solid geology, recovering continuous core and getting to depth. Most of our campaigns combine methods across a site, so tell us the ground model and your objectives and we will recommend the most efficient mix before you finalise the specification.

Do you work on contaminated and brownfield sites?

Yes - geo-environmental investigation is core to what we do. We decontaminate tooling between locations to control cross-contamination, and recover the soil, gas and groundwater samples your assessment needs. Our equipment is set up for volatile and hazardous ground, and our crews are trained for the site-specific controls that brownfield and operational sites demand.

Can you install gas and groundwater monitoring wells?

Yes. We complete window sample and rotary holes with gas and groundwater monitoring installations - standpipes and response zones - to suit your monitoring regime. When an installation has served its purpose we can decommission and grout it, including pressure grouting and over-drilling of redundant wells.
